Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have multiple hosting plans?

Absolutely! If you don't yet have a Slamdot account, go ahead and sign up for your first plan now. Once you have a Slamdot account, you can log in and click the "Buy more hosting" link on your Dashboard.

If you already have a Slamdot account, make sure you're logged in and just pick your new plan above. You'll be taken to a special area inside Slamdot to finalize your order. All of your hosting plans will appear on your Dashboard for easy access to each.

What is the difference between a hosting plan and a website?

While you can host multiple websites under one hosting plan, you may want to consider an additional hosting plan if you are going to be sharing access with other people. For example, if you are maintaining multiple websites for several companies, you would probably want to split each company on to its own plan.

What if I want more than these plans allow?

We offer dedicated servers on a case-by-case basis. Slamdot servers generally start out at $600 per month and are fully managed by our support team. You will have the server entirely to yourself and receive additional server-control functionality within Slamdot. It usually takes 1 week to receive your Slamdot server and availability is limited.

Do you allow SSH access?

No, we currently do not allow SSH access. We do provide an scponly shell so that you may access your files via SFTP/SCP, however you can not enter direct shell commands on the server.

How do I restart my FastCGI applications without shell access?

We provide a FastCGI management tool inside Slamdot that you can use to restart your Ruby on Rails applications and other FastCGI processes on the server.

Can I get a dedicated IP address?

Yes, you can order a dedicated IP address at any time from within your account. The cost is $1 per month and will be prorated to your current billing date.

Can I install an SSL certificate to secure my website?

Yes! First you will need to purchase a dedicated IP address, and then you will have the ability to install your third-party SSL certificate through Slamdot.

We do not sell SSL certificates, so you will need to obtain one from a separate provider or create your own self-signed certificate.

What versions of Apache, PHP, MySQL, and Ruby on Rails are installed?

Our servers run Apache 1.3x, PHP 5.2x, MySQL 5.0x, and Rails 1.2x. For the record, Slamdot was built using Ruby on Rails.

How are PHP5 and Ruby on Rails supported?

PHP5 is installed as an Apache module. Ruby on Rails runs under CGI or FastCGI.

How much does bandwidth overage cost?

Bandwidth overage is charged at a rate of $2.00/GB.
